The presumably only test devised exclusively for this purpose, the Edinburgh Project on Extensive Reading Placement/Progress tests(EPER PPTs), is no longer available. It is desirable for learners to be aware of their starting reading level so that the effectiveness of ER can be maximized. In this study, 107 freshmen at a Japanese university who were about to start ER took the EPER PPT as well as the Test of English for International Communication(TOEIC)Bridge, the Test of English as a Foreign Language Institutional Test Program(TOEFL ITP)Level 2, the Vocabulary Levels Test(VLT)and Productive VLT. They were divided into five EPER reading levels based on the EPER PPT results, and the mean scores of the total, listening and reading sections of the TOEIC Bridge, the total, listening comprehension, structure and written expression along with reading and vocabulary sections of TOEFL ITP, the VLT and Productive VLT scores were analyzed among the five groups.
