This paper discusses the reasons why and how literature can become a driving force in EFL education. Firstly, the traditional approaches used in teaching literature will be briefly reviewed. This will be followed by a description of an integrated approach currently being used effectively in EFL classrooms with students of medium to low English proficiency at a large private university in Japan. This particular approach is flexible in its implementation and has been adapted for all ages and levels of proficiency by the author.
