In the proposed methods, each element in a genotype is not a crisp value (such as a real number) but a fuzzy value. EA processes need to be extended for handling the fuzzy-valued genotypes. The basic idea of the proposed methods is to apply the ordinary EA operations to each of the real parameters of the fuzzy numbers under the constraints required for making the fuzzy numbers valid. Expected applications of the proposed EAs are fuzzy optimization problems such as evolutionary learning of neural networks with fuzzy weights and evolutionary tuning of fuzzy if-then rules for fuzzy systems. Section 2 describes the extensions of EA processes including population initialization, fitness evaluation, and reproduction for the evolution strategy (ES) and the genetic algorithm (GA). Readers will find that EAs other than ES and GA, such as the differential evolution or particle swarm optimization, can also be extended similarly.
