内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 Several decades have passed since I started conducting research about Natsume Soseki. Today I have an interest in him as a thinker. I am fascinated by his way of perceiving the world, that is his literary, social, political, and philosophical speculations. He manifested his ideology clearly at several conferences to inform many participants.
To date I have translated several works of his works: the novel The Miner, a travel record Travel in Manchuria and Korea, and short stories The London Tower, Heredity, and The Sound of Koto. For a better understanding of the Soseki the writer, I would like French-speaking readers to see the records of his conferences, which occupied an important place in his works, so I began to translate all of them into French. I have already translated “My Individualism” and “The Philosophical Basis of Literature." At this time I attempted to translate “Literature and Ethics.”
Let me discuss it. A major newspaper, The Asahi Shinbun, requested Soseki to address four conferences in the Kansai region. “Literature and Ethics” was presented as the fourth and final lecture in Osaka on August 18th, 1911.
He tried to explain morality, using the terms "naturalism" and "romanticism," which were considered at that time as having nothing to do with ethics. He pointed out that there are two kinds of morality: old morality and modern morality. The former is defined as "romantic morality", which is based on the Confucianism of the Tokugawa Era, and which asked for the moral ideals set forth in state and society. The latter is "naturalistic morals," which are oriented towards personal values, reflecting human beings as being naturally defective.
Natsume Sôseki was not only a famous author but also an excellent thinker, and the records of his lectures have been continually read in Japan for more than half a century. I think their universality is to be shared in all countries with the past, present, and future. Unfortunately, he is not so well-known overseas as a thinker as he is as a novelist.
